Levow an Bys means ‘World Voices’ in Cornish. We are a friendly, community choir based in Penzance in West Cornwall. We sing beautiful songs from around the world in 2, 3 and 4 part harmony.
We meet every Wednesday during term-time from 7-9pm at St Mary’s RC School, Peverell Road, Penzance, TR18 2AT. We sing a wide range of rounds, songs and chants from around the world and in a variety of languages. Everything is taught by ear so no need to read music and although we love to explore songs in new languages, they are all taught phonetically so no prior language knowledge is necessary. As a community choir, we welcome both women and men regardless of singing experience or skill. Under the patient, inspiring and lively guidance of choir music director, Pip Wright, everyone is encouraged to have a rewarding and uplifting experience.
We love to sing together and make music for our own pleasure but we also value sharing our enjoyment with audiences a few times a year at events such as Quay Fair Day, St Ives Festival, concerts at St Mary’s Church, Penzance and other informal performances. No pressure to perform at all – we sing for fun and friendship and we have an after-session pub sing each half-term as well as workshops with visiting choir leaders – recent workshops have been led by performers from world-renowned South African group, Simply Soweto Encha, Sharon Stacey (Gospel) and Nana (Republic of Georgia). First session is free to all new comers. Subsequent sessions cost £5, pay as you go.
